Delivering Value for Your Money - A Message from President Al Kling, M.T. Board of Commissioners

We all face financial challenges and we at Manheim Township (“MT”) recognize that the money we are spending is your money.   I thought I would take a moment to briefly highlight where your money is going and where it comes from:

Where does it go?

Public Safety

Our township is well protected by the largest police force in the county (exclusive of Lancaster City).
The commissioners recently had our force and its practices reviewed by an independent consultant, resulting in only minor suggestions.  On the fire side, our fire companies are staffed by quality volunteers, and paid full-time and part-time firefighters.   And to ensure the safety of you and your family in your home and around the township, our top-notch code compliance and planning and development groups ensure that new buildings and modifications comply with the latest standards.

MT residents enjoy more park acreage than any other municipality in the county, two swimming pools, a well-regarded golf course, and an active recreation program.  Our centrally located library has quickly become one of the busiest libraries in the county.  Expanding choices for dining and shopping means many residents need not travel outside the township for great choices to meet many of their daily needs.

In addition to maintaining our extensive parks and recreation sites, our public works staff provides excellent road maintenance, great snow removal, and an active composting site.  We are repaving about ten miles of township roads annually and new road improvements are constantly in the works.  Stormwater management has recently become a key issue, and MT is leading the charge to do our part.

Where does it come from and how do we stand?

MT receives half of the earned income tax and about 10% of your total annual real estate taxes, including the Fire Tax (the rest of those taxes go to the MT school district or Lancaster County).  Through effective management, we have been able to provide all of the above services to township residents with no tax increases over the last seven years.

Your township’s financial position is excellent, with reserves exceeding the outstanding debt and a AAA debt rating, the highest available.   Our pension plans are also well funded.

Questions or Suggestions

If you have questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact Sean Molchany, Township Manager, myself, or any of the other township commissioners.
